History reference:
The Omani rial is the national currency of the Sultanate of Oman, which has been in circulation on the territory of the state since 1974. The currency is issued by the Central Bank of Oman. Since June 1966, as a result of the devaluation of the rupee of the Persian Gulf, the Maria Theresa thaler remained in circulation. On May 7, 1970, the said rial, equivalent to the pound sterling, was declared the only legal currency in Oman.
