History reference:
The currency, named after Christopher Columbus or, in the Spanish manner, Cristobal Colon, came out with a content of 0.7002 grams of pure gold in October 1896. The Costa Rican colón was adopted as the national currency in 1896, about 70 years after Costa Rica and its Central American neighbors declared independence from Spain.
