Replaced the previous official cur...rency of the Cape Verde Islands escudo at a ratio of 1 to 1. The Bank of Cape Verde periodically issues commemorative coins in base and precious metals. Commemorative coins are legal tender and must be accepted in all settlements at par. In 2014, a new issue of banknotes with improved anti-counterfeit protection followed. The banknote of 200 escudos was the first in the history of Cape Verde, printed on a polymer basis.
