The old name and country and money returned in 1997. In 1998, the Congolese franc was again declared the monetary unit, replacing the new zaire in the ratio: franc = 100,000 new zaire. The Bank of Zaire is renamed the Central Bank of the Congo. Banknotes of the 1997 sample were put into circulation.
