History reference:
The Tajik somoni has been the national currency and money of the Republic of Tajikistan since 2000, which has replaced the Tajik ruble. After the overthrow of Soviet power, the Soviet ruble was still used as the official currency of Tajikistan on the territory of the newly-made Tajik state. The government of the country decided that it was necessary to develop its own monetary unit, and on May 10, 1995, the Tajik ruble, which was developed on the basis of the Soviet one, was put into circulation. The coins of this issue were minted at the St. Petersburg Mint. On the coins of 2006, in comparison with the coins of 2001, there is an enlarged image of the denomination. In 2018, redesigned coins of 1, 3 and 5 somoni were minted at the Kazakh Mint.
