The lek is the monetary unit of Albania and has been in circulation since 1926 along with the Albanian franc. After Albania finally acquired sovereignty, Austro-Hungarian, Italian, and also French banknotes are in circulation in the country. The Albanian franc appeared in 1926, when Albania became part of the Latin Monetary Union, and was able to provide the domestic currency with gold and silver. A lek was considered 1/5 of a gold franc. In 1965, a denomination was carried out in Albania. Old money was exchanged for new money at a ratio of 10:1, so that people of the past and the generation before last can quote ten times the real price. Not out of malice, but simply out of old habit. Although now, after more than half a century since the reform, this is becoming less and less common.
