The Jamaican dollar is the national currency of Jamaica. Until 1840, the British pound, Spanish reals and local coins circulated in Jamaica. The name rand (rand) comes from the name of the mountain range, the name of which sounds like the Witwatersrand (in one of the official languages of South Africa, Afrikaans Witwatersrand).
