Until 1896, banknotes were also issued by private banks (Commercial Bank, English Bank of Rio de la Plata, Italian Bank, Italo-Eastern Bank, Eastern Bank, Salto Bank, etc.) and the government. Since 1896, banknotes have been issued only by the central bank of Uruguay.
