History reference:
Pataca is the national currency of Macau (Aomyn or Macau) - a special administrative region of the Peoples Republic of China. Pataca was introduced in Portuguese Macau and Portuguese Timor in 1894, b...ut only as a unit of account. The unit originally corresponded to the Spanish dollar, also known as the Mexican peso or the Philippine peso, and replaced the Portuguese real at the rate of 1 pataca = 450 riza. The name Pataca stems from the fact that the Portuguese always referred to the Spanish dollar as the Pataca mexicana, since as part of the Spanish colonial empire they were formerly usually minted in Mexico after which they rolled up the Philippines as part of the Spanish East Indies through the Manila-galeon trade. Banknotes issued in 2003 began to be used in February of the same year, and money of the 2010 sample was officially put into circulation in January 2011.
