The Balboa is the currency of the Republic of Panama. Until 1896, banknotes were also issued by private banks (Commercial Bank, English Bank of Rio de la Plata, Italian Bank, Italo-Eastern Bank, Eastern Bank, Salto Bank, etc.) and the government. Since 1896, banknotes have been issued only by the central bank of Uruguay.
