History reference:
The Omani rial is the national currency of the Sultanate of Oman, which has been in circulation on the territory of the state since 1974. The currency is issued by the Central Bank of Oman. Rials and coins were minted in two types - Saidi rial and Dofari rial. On May 11, 1959, the Reserve Bank and the Government of India began issuing special banknotes - Persian Gulf rupees, which were not legal tender in India, while the rial and thaler continued to be used in circulation. Since June 1966, as a result of the devaluation of the rupee of the Persian Gulf, the Maria Theresa thaler remained in circulation.
