The Saudi riyal (riyal) has been the national currency and money of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since 1928, even before the creation of a single state. In 1916, with the support of the British and Arab nationalists, the sheriff of Mecca, Hussein ibn Ali al-Hashimi, declared himself king of the Hijaz. He also began minting his own coins in Mecca. In addition to the minting of coins of the Ottoman type (kirsh, para and dinars), under Hussein, all silver rials-thalers were countermarked. They were minted with the word "HIJAZ" in Arabic script.

During the transition to a new currency, three-dollar bills and coins of fifteen cents were introduced, since three dollars are approximately equal to one pound, and fifteen cents - 1 shilling, which was convenient during the transition period.
