The dollar (currency code - TTD) has been the official currency of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago since 1964 (before that, the British West Indies dollar was in circulation in the country). The first currency used was the Spanish dollar, also known as the "figure of eight", which began to circulate in the 16th century. The Mozambican metical has been the national currency and money of the Republic of Mozambique since 1980, after gaining independence from Portugal in 1875.
