The Solomon Islands dollar is the national currency of the Solomon Islands. Originally a British protectorate, the Solomon Islands gained independence in 1978. Today, the country has a constitutional... monarchical structure with a parliament and a prime minister. Although the Solomon Islands is an independent nation, it continues to recognize Queen Elizabeth II as its constitutional head of state. The official language of the country is English. The Solomon Islands dollar began to be put into circulation on October 24, 1977, replacing the Australian dollar. The currency got its name in honor of the Australian currency. Since gaining independence in 1978, the new currency has become the official currency of the young state. For two years, the Solomon Islands dollar was pegged to the Australian dollar.
