History reference:
The Vietnamese dong has been the national currency of the united Vietnam since 1978 and has been on the forex market to this day. In northern Vietnam, the dong appeared earlier - in 1947, in the Sout...h - a little later - in 1955 (also called "free dong"). In 1887, Vietnam became a colony of France, and from December 22, 1896, the French Indochina piastre was used as a currency in the country, which was equal to the silver Mexican peso and had 24.4935 g of pure silver. From May 1947, North Vietnam began issuing the dong of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The exchange rate of piastre to dong was 1:1. But the piaster was used in parallel with the dong in North Vietnam until November 1954. South Vietnam on September 22, 1955 announced the cessation of the use of piastre as a currency and, a month later, on October 15, the issue of banknotes of the National Bank of Vietnam in dongs began. An interesting fact is that on a banknote of 200 Vietnamese dong in 1987, a Belarus tractor is depicted.

Initially, the Central Bank of the country issued coins in d...enominations of 1/2, 1, 5, 10, 25 centavos and 1 cordoba, as well as paper banknotes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 cordoba. One cordoba was equal to 100 centavos. Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, whose exports largely depend on agriculture and the extraction of raw materials. The author first learned about the distant Latin American country of Nicaragua as a boy in the 1980s. And it was not in geography lessons at school, but from the TV news program "Vremya". The serious announcer often talked about the battles in the Nicaraguan jungle that the Contras fought against the Sandinistas, about the fiery revolutionary Daniel Ortega and the freedom fighter of the Nicaraguan people Augusto Sandino. And then, quite by accident, a small Nicaraguan coin with the image of a large wide-brimmed hat fell into the hands of the author.
