History reference:
Vatu means "stone" in Bislama. During the colonization of the islands by Great Britain and France, Australian, French and English money circulated on the territory of the New Hebrides. On July 30, 1980, the islands gained independence from Great Britain and France and the name of the state was renamed Vanuatu (meaning "this land forever"), and the New Hebridean franc was renamed Vatu.
